Bill
McAllen, Photographer, Spirit of Place
Baltimore born and bred, Bill got his start as a medical photographer
for the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Preferring to work
with the living, Bill began his freelance career when a camera still
needed film. Bill has worked with too many publications to mention and
has been on assignments with corporations, foundations and universities
both great and small. Living by the motto that the best stories are
the ones just down the street from where you live, Bill has been the
photographer for the building and journeys around the world for the
schooner Pride of Baltimore II, spent a year shooting the changing seasons
at Green Mount Cemetery, and currently shoots the coming and goings
at the Port of Baltimore. He has an undergraduate degree from Towson
University (though he is not sure what it is for/in) and a Masters in
Publication Design from University of Baltimore. Bill lives in Towson
with his wife and best friend Ellen, four dogs, and their beehives.

Sarah
Achenbach, Writer, Spirit of Place
After a 15-year career as a full-time fundraiser for educational institutions,
Sarah has been freelance writing for regional and national magazines since
1998. Her work frequently appears in Style Magazine, Chesapeake Life,
BOSS Magazine, and several alumni magazines. Currently, she is writing
a book on the history of Garrison Forest School. A graduate of Hollins
College and a happy transplant from Harrisburg, Sarah’s Maryland
roots include her husband and Westminster, Md.-boy, Jayson, and their
two, Baltimore-born sons—the youngest born on the day the cover
of Spirit of Place was photographed. No, Sarah was not present on that
sweltering day in August 2006 for the climb up several ladders to the
top of the Bromo-Seltzer Tower. She was in an air-conditioned hospital,
breathing hard. Bill, loaded down with camera equipment, was in the un-air-conditioned
Bromo-Seltzer Tower, also breathing hard. |
